1. Who we are
Turning Point Treatment Centre (“Turning Point”, “we”, “us”) is a private residential addiction treatment facility in Randburg, Johannesburg. We also operate Seymour House, our halfway house and transitional living facility.
This policy explains how we collect, use, share and protect personal information. It applies to this website and to enquiries you make through the website, through our advertising on Facebook and Instagram, by telephone, by WhatsApp or by email.
For the purposes of the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA), Turning Point Treatment Centre is the responsible party for the information described here.

2. What information we collect
Information you give us. When you contact us or complete an enquiry form, we collect your name, telephone number and email address, who the enquiry is for, which of our services you are asking about, how soon help is needed, whether there is medical aid cover, and anything else you choose to tell us in your message.
Information we collect automatically. When you visit this website we collect your IP address, browser and device type, the pages you view, how long you spend on them, and how you arrived at the site. This is collected through cookies and similar technology, and only to the extent you have agreed to it. Section 6 explains this in full.
Information from advertising platforms. If you complete an enquiry form inside Facebook or Instagram rather than on this website, Meta passes us the contact details you submitted in that form.
We do not ask you to disclose a substance, a diagnosis or a medical condition in order to make an enquiry, and our enquiry forms contain no field for it.
3. Enquiries made on behalf of someone else
Most people who contact us are enquiring for a family member rather than for themselves. If you are a parent, partner, adult child, employer or friend making an enquiry on someone else’s behalf, we collect your own contact details so that we can respond to you, together with whatever you choose to tell us about the person you are concerned about.
We use that information only to answer your enquiry and to explain the options available. Please share only what is necessary for us to help.
Where the person concerned is an adult, we cannot confirm whether they have contacted us, discuss their admission, or share anything about their treatment with you without their consent. This applies even to immediate family. Where the person concerned is a minor, a parent or legal guardian may act on their behalf.
4. Health information and other special personal information
POPIA treats information about a person’s health as special personal information, and section 26 restricts its processing. Section 32 of the Act permits medical professionals, healthcare institutions and facilities providing care to process health information where it is necessary for the proper treatment and care of the person concerned.
We process health information only on that basis, or with your express consent.
In practice this means:
- Health information is collected during clinical assessment and treatment, not through our website or our advertising.
- Access is limited to the clinical and support staff who need it to care for you, all of whom are bound by confidentiality obligations.
- It is stored separately from general enquiry records.
- It is never used for marketing or advertising, is never shared with Meta, Google or any other advertising platform, and is never used to build or refine advertising audiences.
5. Why we process your information
We process personal information in order to:
- respond to your enquiry and answer your questions about our services;
- assess suitability for admission and arrange an admission;
- provide treatment, accommodation, aftercare and halfway house services;
- correspond with your medical aid or funder, where you have authorised us to do so;
- keep the clinical, financial and administrative records that the law requires us to keep;
- meet our legal, regulatory and professional obligations; and
- understand how our website and our advertising perform, so that we can improve both.
Depending on the purpose, we rely on your consent, on the performance of an agreement with you, on a legal obligation, on the protection of a legitimate interest, or on section 32 of POPIA in relation to health information.
6. Cookies, analytics and advertising technology
When you first visit this website you are shown a consent banner. Until you make a choice, only cookies strictly necessary for the site to function are set. Nothing used for analytics or advertising runs before you agree to it.
If you consent, we use:
- Google Analytics 4, to measure how many people visit the site, which pages they read and how they found us. This runs under Google Consent Mode, which means Google receives no advertising or analytics identifiers from you until you have given consent.
- The Meta Pixel, to measure how our Facebook and Instagram advertising performs. The pixel is loaded in a revoked state and transmits nothing until you have given consent.
These tools tell us about visits and enquiries in aggregate. They are never given health information, and we do not use them to target advertising at any individual on the basis of anything they have told us.
You can withdraw your consent at any time by clearing this site’s cookies in your browser, which will cause the banner to appear again, or by using your browser’s cookie controls. Withdrawing consent does not affect processing that already took place while consent was in force.
7. Who we share your information with
We share personal information only where it is necessary, and only with:
- our own clinical, admissions and administrative staff;
- service providers who process information on our behalf under written agreements requiring them to keep it confidential and secure, including our website host, our customer relationship management system, our email provider and our analytics and advertising platforms;
- your medical aid or funder, where you have authorised us to deal with them;
- doctors, therapists, laboratories or other healthcare providers involved in your care, with your consent or where section 32 of POPIA permits it;
- our professional advisors, where necessary; and
- a court, regulator or law enforcement body, where we are legally required to disclose.
We do not sell personal information. We do not share health information with advertising platforms. We do not publish, use in marketing, or disclose to anyone the identity of a person who has contacted us or been treated by us, without that person’s written consent.
8. Information sent outside South Africa
Some of the service providers we use process information on servers outside South Africa. This includes Google, Meta and our customer relationship management provider.
Section 72 of POPIA permits a cross-border transfer where the recipient is subject to a law, binding agreement or corporate rules that provide an adequate level of protection, or where the transfer is necessary to perform an agreement with you or is done with your consent.
We rely on the data protection terms in our agreements with these providers, which require them to apply protections substantially similar to those POPIA requires. Health information is not transferred to any of these platforms.
9. How long we keep your information
Enquiry records, including the contact details and message of someone who contacted us but did not become a client, are kept only for as long as we need them to respond and to understand where our enquiries come from. After that they are deleted or anonymised.
Clinical and treatment records are kept for the minimum period required by the National Health Act 61 of 2003, its regulations and the applicable professional guidelines, and are then destroyed securely.
Financial and tax records are kept for the period required by South African tax and company law.
You may ask us to delete information we hold about you, and section 11 explains how. Where the law requires us to keep a record, we will tell you so rather than delete it.
10. How we protect your information
This website is served over HTTPS, so information you send through it is encrypted in transit.
Access to personal information within Turning Point is limited to the people who need it for their work. Clinical records are held separately from enquiry and marketing records, with tighter access controls. All staff are bound by confidentiality obligations as a condition of employment. Physical files are kept in secured storage.
No system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee that information sent to us over the internet will never be intercepted. If a security compromise affects your personal information, we will notify the Information Regulator and you, as section 22 of POPIA requires.
11. Your rights, and how to complain
Under POPIA you have the right to:
- ask whether we hold personal information about you, and ask for a copy of it (section 23);
- ask us to correct or delete information that is inaccurate, irrelevant, excessive, out of date, incomplete, misleading or obtained unlawfully (section 24);
- object to our processing of your information on reasonable grounds (section 11(3));
- withdraw a consent you previously gave; and
- lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator.
To exercise any of these rights, contact our Information Officer at info@turningpointrecovery.co.za or on +27 66 177 9363. Objections and requests for correction or deletion may be made on the forms prescribed in the POPIA Regulations. We will ask you to verify your identity before we act on a request about personal information.
If you are not satisfied with how we have handled your request, you may complain to:
